Valencia farmers train in
cacao growing
The Department of Ag- riculture (DA) here has provided local farmers with the latest technology on the growing of cacao to steer farmers towards gen- erating high income. In support of the Plant, Plant, Plant Program (4Ps), the agriculture department has provided cacao farm- ers in Valencia town with a package of technology seminar on cacao farming. The training program is mandated under Republic Act 7900 or the High-Value Crops Development Act of 1995 that provides assis- tance for production, mar- keting, and processing of cacao and other high-value crops. The package of tech-
nology is designed to help cacao
farmers be fully equipped with knowledge and skills in planting cacao and help them improve their livelihood, said Mary Ronville Aba, high value crops program action offi- cer of DA.
The technology in- cludes cultural manage- ment, best cacao farming practices, and costs and re- turns of cacao farming. "The participants also undergo a practicum on actual pruning of unneces- sary branches. To add more
enthusiasm to the trainees, we invited a French in- vestor who will directly buy the cacao beans of the farmers, assuring them of market," Aba said.
las Astarie shared that he wanted to work with ca- cao farmers for his choco- late-making business. "I will personally train

our cacao farmers for them to be able to produce qual- ity cacao beans. Cacao is a high-value crop so if it is properly taken cared of, there will be a big reve- nue," Astarie said.
Jorge Buling, a cacao farmer of Brgy. Bung- aw, Valencia who owns a two-hectare cacao area, said the seminar has been informative.
“Daghan kaayo ko og nakat-unan sa among bansaybansay karon, ug amo gyud kining i-apply unya sa among mga cacao nga tanum (I learned a lot during the training and I will apply these in my ca- cao farm)," Buling said. Hilaria Olasiman, also a cacao farmer from Brgy. Malaunay, Valencia, ex- pressed her gratitude to DA for conducting a cacao seminar.
