Non-fi ction

Aweh! aims to produce readers who can read with meaning and who move from being passive recipients of information to active learners who seek information. The aim is to encourage active learning. Situations are created and then uestions are asked. The child is then encouraged to fi nd the answer, to think for themselves and to ask uestions.

or example, the learning focus of Level 3 eader 4 is Good manners. The eader shows different everyday situations and asks what the polite way to greet a particular person is at different times of the day.

The focus question is asked and answered on page 6.

The focus question is asked again on page 7.

To show the three possibilities, question marks have been used to prompt the child to ask if this option is correct.

The worm is the inquiry guide as he models the question.

The repetition of the clock showing that it is afternoon reinforces the Maths concept and the teaching that took place on page 6.

Aweh! Level 3 Reader 4 Vocabulary

To support vocabulary acuisition, Aweh! has developed Big Books that have more text and more complex text than that of the eaders. Big Book text is used for Shared eading, and can be done as a whole class or in smaller groups.

Aweh! has developed vocabulary lists of curriculum-based content and instructional words that are South African-based and match the APS curriculum. The lists for English, isihosa and isiulu include the most freuently used or important words learners will encounter in a oundation Phase classroom.

The Aweh! English word list is the only such list in South Africa. All other sight word and high freuency word lists come from America and the nited ingdom. They are often based on newspapers as the source of data and so adult words like corporation and committee appear on the list. The Aweh! list however, is based on the local child’s environment and curriculum.
