In 1993 The Rare and Difficult Species (RAD’s) scheme was started in collaboration with Newcastle University with the goal of establishing the more difficult species.
As a reflection of the success of the early years it was decided to maintain a stock of pure blood Gouldian Finches as the society was rightly concerned that they would be lost to mutations. The A.F.S. now has a number of member groups that specialise in specific species. These all come under the umbrella of RAD’s. groups. The latest to be formed is one for the Timor Zebra Finch.
