Transaid highlights achievements
BIFA Members have generously supported our partner charity Transaid at the BIFA Awards ceremony in recent years and we are delighted to share some of their achievements of 2019-20. Transaid transforms lives through safe, sustainable,
and available transport, focusing on two core areas: road safety and access to healthcare. See a video of Transaid’s programme highlights
between April 2019 and March 2020 at:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp-UE25u5kc In addition to maintaining its regular activity, Transaid
has been responding to COVID-19 by empowering truck drivers in Uganda to protect themselves from the virus, and adapting its MAMaZ Against Malaria programme to tackle COVID-19 in rural Zambian communities. Communication is key in stopping the spread of
COVID-19. When tackling a new virus, it is important that vital health information is disseminated in a way that everyone can access.
That is why Transaid and its partners are using a
variety of innovative ways to spread awareness about the pandemic, including posters, radio jingles and public announcement systems. Read the full story to find out what your support is

Clarification on the use of Limited Quantity (LQ)
Following our recent article on dangerous goods, in particular limited quantities, (BIFAlink, October 2020) there has been some inadvertent confusion and it is appropriate to clarify the use of the abbreviation ‘LQ’. It is recognised that under the
IMDG regulations (3.4.6.1) there is a requirement when completing the Dangerous Goods Note (DGN) to use only the prescribed terms ‘limited quantities’ or “LTD QTY”. In
6
writing the article about limited quantity goods, the abbreviation ‘LQ’ was used as a shorthand version for limited quantities. When reviewing the abbreviation
in the article in the context of the above mentioned paragraph, the author of the original article does not believe that the abbreviation used was necessarily incorrect, given that it was not being used in a declaration or the completion of a DGN, nor was it suggesting that the abbreviation
‘LQ’ should be used in the completion of such documentation. However, it is recognised that
the abbreviation ‘LTD QTY’ could alternatively have been used in the article and that this would have been aligned with the IMDG Code terminology. This clarification should be read
in conjunction with the original article, and we thank the TT Club for both the original article and this clarification.
Peter Widdowson 1943-2020
We were sad to hear that former BIFA National Chairman Peter Widdowson passed away in September after a long battle with cancer. Peter was BIFA national
chairman from 1997 to 1999. He founded Airspeed Cargo in the 1970s and was later chief executive of APECC Holdings. BIFA extends its condolences to Peter’s family.
