MARTIN & CO A CHRISTMAS ENGAGEMENT
Planning to pop the question over the festive period? You’ll need a ring… Here’s how to choose the best diamond ring, whatever your budget
30
Christmas is one of the most popular times for marriage proposals and, after such a challenging year, there’s no reason to think that 2020 will be any different. After all, if you got through lockdown together…
Of course, at the heart of every proposal is the ring. But if finding the right partner took a while, tracking down the perfect ring can be even trickier. Luckily, if you’re looking for a diamond ring, you only have to remember the four Cs of cut; colour; clarity; and carat.
THE FOUR CS
The cut, surprisingly, doesn’t refer to the shape. It’s about the symmetry, proportions, the thickness around the edge of the diamond and the final polish. The better the cut, the livelier and brighter the diamond. For colour, get the best you can afford. Anything from D-G is recommended as the diamond will still look white.
Clarity though is not as important as some people think. Above an SI (slightly included) on the GIA grading scale represents a good quality diamond. The weight of the diamond is measured in carats and may also be referred to as points (with 100 points in 1 carat). If you were on a tighter budget but wanted a large diamond, you could choose an 80 or 90 point diamond which would be less expensive without losing too much of the visual size.
After the four Cs, you just need to think about shape. Round brilliants are the most popular as they have more facets and, therefore, they have better scintillation than other cuts of diamonds. Another good option is a princess cut (square) for something a little different.
