ADVOCACY SPOTLIGHT
INTERVIEWED BY SAHELY MUKERJI
ASCA’s Board of Directors elected Michael J. Patter- son, RN, CASC, as ASCA Board president in May. He will serve a two-year term.
All members of ASCA’s Board also serve on the ASCA Foundation Board.
I am the president and chief executive offi- cer of Mississippi Valley Health in Davenport, Iowa. Prior to that role, I have held several leadership roles in healthcare, including the position of chief nurse executive of a three-hos- pital health system and chief admin- istrative officer of a 350-bed hos- pital. I have a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Illi- nois and spent 23 years in the US Navy as a trauma nurse. There, I held the position of officer in charge of my expeditionary medical force unit. I have been fortunate to see several different healthcare delivery models from around the world, and I really like the position the ASC industry is in regarding our ability to meet the needs of the patient in a high-quality, lower-cost setting. Having exposure to both the hospital side and the ASC side provides me with perspective from both industries. This has been beneficial in my discussions with elected officials and others as we for- mulate plans to ensure the continued advocacy of the ASC industry.
MJP: I was fortunate enough to be selected to sit on the ASCA Govern- ment Affairs Committee many years
doing to further the mission of ASCs across the country. Attending fly-ins [National Advocacy Day events] and learning from ASCA staff members about how the advocacy process works was invaluable as we look to be the voice for our industry.
I have attended several ASCA fly-ins [National Advocacy Day events], which are remarkably well run, provide a wealth of knowledge to attendees about proposed legislation, and offer guidance on how to dialogue with elected officials and their staff to ensure we are educating and informing key members of Congress.”

ago. In addition, myself and a few other key ASC leaders from around the state of Iowa developed the first Iowa ASC association, which allowed us to have a voice in our state and learn from what our national ASC association was

MJP: I have presented at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) a few times, most recently, regarding the safety and efficacy of total joint replacements (TJR) in the ASC setting. One of our facilities has been performing TJR for more than 10 years, so we were able to use our suc- cess story to advocate for this change. I have attended several ASCA fly- ins, which are remarkably well run, provide a wealth of knowledge to attendees about proposed legislation, and offer guidance on how to dia- logue with elected officials and their staff to ensure we are educating and informing key members of Congress. I have helped other state associa-
tions develop plans for advocacy and been fortunate enough to review and comment on several advocacy let- ters developed by ASCA staff, as well as participate in calls with CMS and White House leadership. I firmly believe we have to be part of the solu- tion for the rising healthcare costs in this country and ensure that our industry educates constituents regard- ing the safety and efficacy of ASCs.
MJP: Continue to recruit and retain top-tier talent at ASCA to advocate for our industry and educate our elected
