“Strong governance plays a large role in creating an environment for success during such a period,” Gui- nane says. “With so much complex- ity, figuring out the nuances is critical for survival. Through our governing board members, we have been able to work with our partners and inves- tors to enable the continued delivery of high-quality care.”
tant that the clinical discussions con- cerning an evolving virus included our joint venture ASCs.”
Operational alignment also is vital, Peek adds. “Many of our clini- cians and staff go between our hos- pitals and Baylor Scott & White- branded ASCs. We created a unified and standardized operating model for them. When we established policies and protocols around PPE, for exam- ple, it was important that these prac- tices were consistent from one facil- ity to the next.”
On an individual ASC level, the pandemic has further demonstrated to Guinane the importance of an active and engaged governing board. Each of the Cedars-Sinai joint venture ASCs has its own board comprising physician and health system represen- tatives. These board members have taken on key responsibilities during the crisis, including assisting with tri- aging and prioritizing patients, educa- tion, resource allocation and under- standing stimulus programs as they became available.

While Reddy is pleased with how SurgCenter of Western Maryland and UPMC have worked together during the crisis thus far, he knows this is not the time to rest on their laurels. “We do not know what the future holds, so we are preparing together for a possible surge of COVID-19 cases. Responding to a crisis requires all hands on deck. We are fortunate to have a partner that views our ASC as an integral part of what they do and treats this relation- ship as a two-way street.” Peek says that the joint venture partners view uniformity in words and actions as essential to remaining prepared. “We want to make sure that if we are espousing a certain pathway to establish safety for our hospitals, that we are sharing that information with our ASCs. What remains impor- tant is a consistency in our messag- ing to our patients and the communi- ties we serve about our commitment to doing things in the most safe and efficient manner.” As long as COVID-19 remains a threat, Guinane says her ASCs will continue to collaborate closely with Cedars-Sinai. “We share what is working and what is not as well as lessons learned, which guides the improvements we make across our ASCs. There is a team spirit among all that helps propel us to successful outcomes. We are appreciative of our patients for their trust in us during this health crisis and do not want to let them down.”
