Lights work
A BUSY road in Maidstone has seen four-way traffic lights put in place while work goes on to up- grade it. The lights at the junction of the

Mother and daughter cook up monster story
A MEMBER of the team at the Valley Invicta Academies Trust, which runs Invicta Grammar School, has landed a book deal with a wacky story for children. Gianna Pollero-Payne (41), of Salisbury Road, credits her daugh- ter Sophia, nine, as the inspiration for her story Monster Doughnuts, which will be published next sum- mer. The heroine Grace uses dough-
nuts with a secret ingredient as her weapon against baddies. The book is published by Pic-
cadilly Press, with two more in the pipeline. The mother of two said: “Writ-
ing books for children has been a dream of mine since I was 10 years old.
“My daughter Sophia has such
an active imagination and some- how came up with the idea one day of a man-eating cyclops who plays board games and eats doughnuts.
“I have written books before that
came very close to being pub- lished, so this one feels like it was meant to be and feels so right. I have been writing for about 20 years. “For Monster Doughnuts, I must
have written 50 different versions and the book has changed so much since that first manuscript. “The age range focuses mainly
on seven to nine year olds, so working with local primary schools, I think it would be a bit mean of me not to stock them there when it comes out.” Gianna, who worked as a Kent
Police communications officer for 13 years, says its “overwhelming but exciting” to juggle both her day job and launching her first book. She added: “It feels bizarre and I
cannot believe it has worked out so well. Everyone from my literary agent to the illustrator, Sarah Horne, has been absolutely amaz- ing.”
