Husband jailed after fatal crash
A PENSIONER who killed his disabled wife after falling asleep at the wheel last year has been sent to prison for 32 months. Thomas Whibley (72), of Temple
Way, East Malling, appeared be- fore Maidstone Crown Court on July 22 on charges of death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dan- gerous driving. At an earlier hearing, the prose-
cution told how Whibley caused the death of his wheelchair-bound wife Sylvia Whibley (82). She had been a passenger in the Peugeot van driven by the defendant in Cranbrook Road, Tenterden, in April 2019. After nodding off at the wheel,
his vehicle crossed the white line in the winding, country road and crashed into a vehicle travelling in
the opposite direction. Despite heroic efforts by an off -duty fire service officer to revive Mrs Whib- ley, she died at the scene. Whibley also caused injury to the
driver of a Nissan Qashqai, Claire Brockman, who had a child in the car with her. The driver suffered multiple
fractures and spend several days in hospital and six weeks on crutches. She described the driver as being
“in a daze”, staring straight ahead and not blinking. Her child suf- fered minor cuts and bruises. The court heard Whibley suffers
from sleep deprivation apnoea, which causes sufferers to drop off with little or no warning, but had carried on driving. According to the NHS, the con-
dition can cause depression, tired- ness and loss of concentration. Whibley, who admitted the of-
fences, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison and was banned from driving for life.
