Training Increased government funding for training
As described elsewhere in this month’s BIFAlink, on 12 June the government confirmed that it would neither seek nor accept an extension to the Transition period which ends on 31 December 2020. Issues that remain unclear are the precise number of additional customs entries that this will generate and the impact of new customs procedures such as the Goods Vehicle Management System. additional support for the sector totalling £50 million to assist with recruitment, training and supplying IT equipment to handle customs declarations. This scope is very similar to that covered by the second round of support measures, which brought the previous level of financial support measures up to £34 million. Whilst the additional £50 million is welcome, there is no guarantee that it will produce the thousands of additional customs brokers that it is anticipated will be required.

Forwarders should remember that staff can
undertake training whilst furloughed. Also the furlough scheme (which closes on 31 October 2020) is being amended to allow some part-time working. This allows Members to either retrain existing staff or recruit new staff to undertake customs related activities. Details of what is covered (and not covered) by
It is also unclear as to precisely when these
additional staff will be required. There is anecdotal evidence that the six months’ delay in submitting a customs declaration is not attracting a great deal of support. It is a relatively short delay and requires the trader to obtain an
