Attend ASCA’s Webinar on Preventing Surgical Fires Working together in recent years, the Association of periOperative Reg- istered Nurses (AORN), the ECRI Institute, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the Anes- thesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) and other stakeholders have refined the clinical recommendations for preventing and managing surgi- cal fires. Review current guidance on the prevention of surgical fires, including statistics on the incidence of these continuing adverse events, during ASCA’s next webinar on Tuesday, October 27, at 1:00 pm ET. Mark E. Bruley, vice president of accident and forensic investigation at the ECRI Institute, will explain how to mount your best defense by focusing on identifying surgical devices, materials and fluids that can burn; determining how those materials are ignited; the haz- ards of oxidizer-enriched atmospheres; new clinical recommendations for ways to minimize the chance of a surgical fire; techniques used to extinguish a fire involving a patient; and identifying the appropriate operating room locations for and types of fire extinguishers.
