COVER STORY “Once we know their deductible

and coinsurance amount, we look at our contract grid,” Ziegler-Otis says. “We know what we get paid by the various insurance companies for our procedures. Based upon that figure, we can determine a patient’s antici- pated out-of-pocket cost. We let them know the figure quoted may change between that call and the date of the procedure, but it still allows us to pro- vide a good estimate of cost.” This

process, which Ziegler-

Otis estimates takes no more than 15 minutes, has yielded significant benefits for the ASC, she says. “It creates great dialogue with patients prior to the procedure. You are establishing

a relationship with

them, so when they receive their bill, things go smoother. Patients are not

experiencing ‘sticker shock.’ We are collecting more money upfront. If we know the amount a patient will owe is to exceed $1,000, it presents an opportunity to have a discussion about making a down payment.” On occasion, the service has caused the ASC to lose procedures,

Our patients trust us to look out for them, and that now includes taking into consideration their financial as well as their clinical needs.”

but Ziegler-Otis says that is part of the reason why the surgery center started the process. “If we learn a patient coming to us may be spend- ing more than if they go to another facility for their procedure, we advise them to check how much it would cost to receive care from other in-network providers in the area.” As with OSCC’s price transpar-

ency program, Ambulatory Surgical Center of Stevens Point’s process is about helping patients, Ziegler-Otis says. “Our patients trust us to look out for them, and that now includes tak- ing into consideration their financial as well as their clinical needs. This pro- cess is another way for us to ensure that our patients receive great care at a low cost.”
