Feature Article Continued from pg 17

The cooperative nature of our industry is demonstrated in the willingness to share production orders and supplies to keep foundries open and running. “Work together to ensure end product is being produced and supply chains filled, if there is a recession, share resources and work to keep companies running,” responded one member. Another noted,” Sharing of supplies would be an opportunity, in fact we have ‘loaned’ binder to a competitor and were ‘paid back’ when their supply was replenished. If a foundry was required to shut down temporarily due to a COVID-19 outbreak, I hope neighboring foundries would offer to run parts for a short period to help that foundry. I feel confident that would happen in our region.”

Others commented on the sharing of ideas. “The best

opportunity is sharing best practices and how each foundry is addressing. The recent article where each foundry shared some tidbits of information was helpful. Such as social distancing ideas, sanitation, employee communication, reaction plan if an employee becomes sick, etc.”, noted one foundry. Another commented, “We have been comparing best practices and some contingency planning items with our ICI friends.”

In terms of customer support, one Member offered: “We

have begun free customer webinars for training. Short, one hour in length vs our typical 2 to 4 hour sessions.” While another took a local community focus: “Support local businesses that have been disrupted by purchasing gift cards for cash infusion. Keep people working as long as possible to reduce the economic impact of the current measures...”

In summation, the majority of the industry is feeling the impact of the Corona-virus Pandemic. Members report that the worst hit industries are Medical (Orthopedic Implants), Artwork and Oil & Gas, with Automotive and Aerospace following close behind. The economic impact is expected to be felt through the balance of 2020 and into the first half of 2021. The industry at large is taking appropriate measures to protect employees and prevent the spread of the disease, and as anticipated, Members are willing to collaborate with each other in support of each other, the communities in which they operate and customer needs.

The ICI thanks Members for participating in this brief,

yet meaningful survey. It is the hope of the Institute that readers derive benefit from each other’s comments and actions described herein. If you are in need of support to keep operations safely up and running, you are encouraged to contact the ICI for assistance in finding support.
