talks about how DBDT is moving forward and staying visible through our collective isolation. Check out what DBDT is doing in the Q&A below! What you are doing in these uncertain times? DBDT is staying visible through social media. This time at home has given our dancers a chance to demonstrate their other creative skills, as they have been collaborating with the marketing department to produce some uniquely different content for social media. We have started an online newsletter, #DBDTatHome, where our dancers can share more aspects of their talents. Both DBDT and DBDT: Encore! have been busy while practicing social distancing, collaborating from home to produce projects for patrons to enjoy while they shelter in place. The dancers hope these videos will motivate and inspire those who watch them. You can also find the videos on DBDT YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram accounts, as well as the #DBDTatHome page on the
DBDT.com website. Q: What do you need for support? We hope people recognize the importance of the arts and find ways to stay engaged with both arts creators and arts organizations. For those who have purchased tickets to canceled
performances,

margodeanballet.com donating those
tickets or transferring those tickets towards a future performance is very helpful. And, of course, donations at any level will make a big difference. Q: How can DCNT help support you? With a lot more people working from home, they are spending more time on social media. If
arts supporters could share arts social
media content with friends, that could help the arts to gain more patrons. As people are confined and restricted from their traditional engagement with others, the arts can help fill
that intrinsic need for
connection, and inspiration while creating a sense of community through distance.
Q: Are you continuing to provide classes for students? We are moving to online classes at our Dallas Black Dance Academy for our 44 weekly classes that train youth and adult students. The Academy will hold the online classes in April and May for current Academy students only. We are also working with multiple ISD’s to move our outreach programs online, where we provide weekly classes in 15 schools across four districts. In addition, DBDT is working to develop online content for its summer programs. Check the website for more details in May. Q: How do you see yourself coming out of
this situation? The arts are a critical
component of our humanity, and when this is over, the arts will be even more important in all of our lives. DBDT’s executive director states that after 30+ years as a non-profit leader, and having survived three major stock market collapses, 9/11, and now this, DBDT (board, staff and dancers) knows that the end result has always been a transformative pivot for the organization simply because we choose to see every major obstacle to our survival as a visionary challenge and new opportunity to lead in greatness. Q: How you are coping during the pandemic? All departments of Dallas Black Dance Theatre are extremely busy working from home. We are developing ways to stay connected with our patrons as we work towards the future when we can present live performances and training. Even though our staff is working from home, we are encouraging them to take breaks to stretch or clear their minds and use this time to develop transformational ideas for their work.

Sound and Movement Collective) What you are doing in these uncertain times? I am the Dancers Program Director at the University of St. Thomas, and we went online with less than a week to prepare, so, like so many, I have been teaching dance technique and choreography by Zoom, teaching Dance history online, and creating an online concert to replace our canceled concert. We are a new program, so I am working to keep the dancers creatively engaged and excited about what they can create in a video format. So much learning through creative problem solving is happening, right now. I am also teaching live classes on Instagram and Facebook as a way to give back and support our community! I have been so appreciative of the classes so many are offering and this is my way return the gift. These classes have helped me feel a part of the larger dance community. As a creative, I am working with Lynn Lane and the Transitory Sound and Movement Collective to create work that responds to this time. We are creating a series called “Collective Isolation” of multi-disciplinary works created online, and then when we can gather together again, we will create something live together as a culmination of the series. Q: What do you need for support? In general, as most dancers and dance teachers, I am finding that
I need training and equipment

to create stronger digital content. I am also searching for ways to support my students, many of whom are struggling in this time. I think we all need some support for our mental health as we move through this collective trauma, and I am learning so much about the 15 • DANCE NORTH TEXAS • MAY – JULY 2020
