LIVE 24-SEVEN

KEEP SMILING THROUGH . . . CONTINUITY IN STRANGE TIMES

As Dame Vera Lynn famously sang in “We’ll meet again”, probably the most iconic and community- cementing song of World War 2 (no, I wasn’t there, but my mum and dad certainly were).

When I received the email from the boss, to say that April’s edition of Live 24-Seven was going ahead, and why was I late as usual (he didn’t quite put it like that, but he was probably entitled to), I was at first a little surprised, but then immediately very heartened.

Although for me it wouldn’t feel right to simply treat this as any other month, and tell you how fantastic is the new range from somebody fabulous, it is totally right to try to establish some sense of continuity in these strange times, where things change on not a daily, but sometimes hourly basis.

The other thing I’m keen not to do is to come across as somehow trying to cash in on the situation. You too may have had emails pop into your in-box offering, for example, to install a complete home office for you in the next week.

The fact remains though, that if we are to overcome this menace – and overcome it I believe we will – we will all be spending much more time at home, for a considerable period to come.

So let’s try to make the best of a situation we almost certainly wouldn’t have chosen to be in.

If you’re working from home, and are fortunate enough to have a study or home office, why not take the opportunity to spruce it up a bit. A lick of paint in a new colour could transform the place, making it more inviting. Or, what about a new blind or rug? These are small changes that can make a big difference.

For those of us who don’t have a separate work room, the advice is to pick a quiet spot (not that any of us with small children will be finding that easy any time soon!!!), and use it as a dedicated space in which to do all your work, so that once you’ve finished you can walk away and forget about it until the next day. This could be a dining room – goodness knows I’ve been banging on about revitalising dining rooms for many a year. But please, please don’t use your bedroom. Whilst I’m sure it would be easy to wake up, grab a cuppa, and sit in your bed with your laptop, well, on your lap, it’s really not a good idea. I’ve always preached that your bedroom should be a special place, a relaxing and indulgent place, the most “you” room in the house. The last thing you need is for your place of sanctuary to have associations with work.

If, however, you find that you’re simply not in a position financially to commit to even the smallest of changes, why not use this time of imposed home dwelling to plan your next
