TOYMAGEDDON AT Wessex Auction Rooms

The Only Way is Wessex’ and ‘The Rock n Roll Auctioneers’ are phrases often used to describe

Wessex Auction Rooms, both terms of endearment given by customers that have either bought or sold through the company. However, there is a term created by the auctioneers themselves that is possibly used even more than those above that best describes the situation at their premises just off junction 17 of the M4 over in Draycott Cerne. That term is Toymageddon. It’s not a word that can be found in the English dictionary so we had to ask director and Bargain Hunt regular Tim Weeks what it actually means:

“It means that we sell so many toys in our Specialist Toy Collectors Auctions that it feels like a global event where the world has been taken over by toys!”

Just from watching the regular antiques related television shows it is clear to see that toys are now a very prominent part of the auction landscape in the same way that furniture, ceramics, fine art, silver and jewellery have traditionally been considered. Wessex Auction Rooms have long specialised in the area of toys with a team of specialists on hand and Tim explained why toys are so popular…

“It’s all about nostalgia. Something that is so great about toys is that each generation is creating new

collectables. Hornby model railway, Dinky and Corgi diecast models and Dolls and Teddies from the 40s, 50s and 60s can still be seen achieving fantastic results for sellers, while action figures from TV shows like Transformers, He Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and others from the 80s and 90s are now often matching the more traditional toys of the past in value.”

Wessex Auction Rooms now even have a section of retro computer gaming consoles and games within the Toy Collectors’ Auction which was unheard of 10 years ago. Whether it’s Nintendo, Sega, or Commodore, the vendors of such items could be sat on a small fortune.

So, if one thinks that they might have toys from yesteryear that they no longer want, what is the best thing for them to do? “Come and see us!” says Tim. “Our doors are always open for items to be brought in for sale, and we welcome everyone in Wiltshire to do so. Whatever toys you have, old, new, mint, dirty, dusty or perfect we would love to see them and are sure we can do a professional and brilliant job. It’s our dream to sell toys for every person in Wiltshire, so if we haven’t sold yours yet? What are you waiting for?!’

Wessex Auction Rooms are open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm for consignments as well as offering free advice by phone 01249 720888 or email enquiries@wessexauctionrooms. co.uk
