///FREIGHT BREAK An example to us all
As we contemplate our too- small pension pots, perhaps we should take heart from the example of freight forwarder Geb Boito, still going strong in his mid-seventies. According to Stewart
Campion, head of commercial at Hamburg Süd, Geb who celebrates his 73rd birthday soon, came to the UK in the mid-1960s to study engineering. But he then applied for a job at forwarder MAT which wanted someone who could speak languages to build up the European market. He continued to help drive
forward developments in Italy and spent time in Milan opening MAT’s first office and remained in charge of the department at MAT until he left to join Avendero for a very short period before, in 1996, moving on to lead a small team of staff at Bucci Freight
Brock slinks away A serious case of Burns
Like the shy and secretive badger aſt er which it is named, the infrastructure put in place for the Operation Brock scheme to keep traffi c fl owing on Kent’s motorways has proved to be an elusive beast. A few months aſt er the 15-mile-
long steel barrier on the London- bound carriageway of the M20 was completed in March 2019 – at a cost of many millions of pounds and months of tedious speed restrictions for drivers on one of the country’s busiest roads – Highways England announced that it was not needed aſt er all because the risk of post-Brexit disruption had been reduced. The Freight Transport Association welcomed the
move but seemed unconvinced that the threat of Brexit-related disruption had gone for good. Policy manager for the South East, Heidi Skinner, commented: “In the view of our members, it is crucial for all logistics vehicles to be ‘border-ready’ before entering Kent to avoid additional delays. And, until the threat of a No Deal Brexit is completely off the table, FTA is still advising its members to make all necessary preparations to ensure the industry can keep Britain trading.” As a fi nal sting in the tail, the
work to remove the barrier started with a full closure of the M20 in both directions for a couple of days in mid-January.
Why is the entrance to Brittany Ferries’ offi ces at Plymouth ferry port host to a huge painting based on a famous poem by Rabbie Burns – just about as far from Scotland as it is possible to get? Many people have asked that question, including several staff from the ferry operator itself. The answer is that the huge
painting based on Burns’ poem Tam O’Shanter is by Scottish artist, Alexander Goudie, and is
just one of the ferry operator’s own 1,300-strong art collection, 300 of them by Goudie. And Brittany’s Bretagne ferry–
which sails between Portsmouth and St Malo – is a fl oating art gallery entirely dedicated to Alexander Goudie’s work in print, oil and ceramic. It’s been described as a fl oating love letter to Brittany, a region loved by the artist, where he lived and worked.

director of the company, he has maintained his absolute dedication, professionalism and loyalty to his employer, employees and, of course his valued customers. He has often gone above and beyond to ensure that his customers receive the best possible efficient, effective service from the company” – even breaking off his holidays to help to resolve problems. In summary: “Geb is a person,

dedicated to his work, passionate and loyal to his customers and the company and his family are extremely proud of him although his wife, Hilary, would like to see more of him. He is a great family man, loved by everyone and highly respected by all within the freight industry.”
No, it’s not a horror movie - Teesside’s shipping community has donated a thermal imaging camera to the local lifeboat to help it increase the eff ectiveness of its search and rescue s. The
camera was jointly
purchased by PD Ports, the Tees and Hartlepool Port Users Association (THPUA) and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS). PD Ports contributed its half
of the £3,000 donation through its ‘Find it-Fund it’ scheme, an initiative that supports local causes involving its employees. It will be used by the Redcar
RNLI crew to identify casualties at sea or on land and can detect heat sources up to a kilometre away. Importantly, it is not aff ected by the bright lights of Teesside - mostly heavy industry rather than casinos or nightclubs, we hasten to add.
