Dales Marine Services Receive Serco Marine Services Vessel SD Northern River


Anchor windlass rope drums – new bushes manufactured and fitted in situ. Crew reporting these now “whisper quiet”.

Departure of SD Northern River marks another safety milestone for Dales Marine Services – one year without Loss Time Incident at their Leith Facility.

Following a comprehensive dry-docking programme, are equally pleased to have safely returned the vessel on agreed completion date. So, a pre-Christmas sail away from Leith for this large multi-purpose auxiliary ship engaged in support of the United Kingdom's Naval Service. SD Northern River is currently the largest ship operated by Serco Marine Services, both in terms of dimensions and gross tonnage.


Tom Cakebread, Serco Marine’s Technical Manager in Scotland, comments, “Dales Marine Services Leith have carried out the dry dock specification for the SD Northern River in a timely and very professional manner once again. Grateful for all the Yard’s personnel efforts in achieving the end result in a safe and efficient operation.”


Main work undertaken on SD Northern River at Dales Marine Services Leith included:


• Top end overhauls of the main engines including cam shaft replacement;


• Removal, strip down, survey, and overhaul of 2 aft thrusters and forward units;


• Replacement of thruster oil purification system; • Seal change of the port and starboard propellers.


Also completed was survey and overhaul of the 3 deck cranes, including hose and slew ring bolt changes. Renewal of the tugger winch pipework system which has 0.9 metre diameter, and 50 metre overall length.
