Diverse Investment Casting Usage Spurs Industry Growth By 0. D. Harpold, President, Casting Engineers
Although the investment casting process which originated in China 3500 years ago is generally
considered the oldest method of precision casting, most of the growth and diversification in this industry occurred during the last decade.
Increased usage, plant expansion, new machinery purchases, increased personnel-all are accurate reflections of industry growth. And in all these areas the investment casting industry has grown .
By diversifying its markets, investment casting has assured itself a more prominent place in the future of industry.
In a recent survey by an industry-oriented magazine, companies polled indicated a planned 47 per cent increase in investment casting usage, placing
this process among the top ones slated for growth in 1966-a trend expected to continue well into 1967.
What has led to this growth and the diversification which caused it? In the last 10 years companies discovered that the myth involving investment
casting was just that. No longer do engineers and designers within enlightened firms feel that the only place to use an investment cast part is where another process cannot be used, or that only turbine (jet engine-aerospace) parts can be economically produced by investment casting.
These engineers and designers have, in fact, discovered that the fr~edom of design with the investment casting process is phenomenal. Even unmachinable metals can be investment cast with fine results. Complex castings from pinhead size up to several hundred pounds have been successfully investment cast.
