Creative Spaces are Dallas Public Library’s new makerspaces carved out of vacant rooms in the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library. Each space serves a different creative endeavor: storytelling, fiber arts and preservation. The library provides unique equipment and technology to allow the public to get hands-on experience, build new skills or try a new hobby. Story Center on the 3rd floor offers oral, written and digital ways to help you share your story. You can reserve the entire room, if you need to make a podcast or video, or you can reserve just a piece of equipment, if you don’t need the whole space. The multi-use space is outfitted with podcasting equipment, green screen, Mac and Adobe. Tell your story, real or imagined, and share it in a variety of ways.

Fiber Arts Workroom is dedicated to all things fabric and thread: sewing, knitting, embroidery, weaving and more. It’s located on the 4th floor.
The Heritage Lab is located on the 8th floor, offering specialized equipment to create digital copies of your family treasures. Reserve the piece of equipment that best meets your digitization needs for a three hour session. When converting a video or audio cassette to digital formats, media is converted in real time. The Heritage Lab’s purpose is to digitize personal/family collections and any material of a civic, cultural, or educational nature. Copyright law prohibits copying commercial works. Special events and workshops are planned for all three spaces.
PODCASTING + PRESERVATION AT THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY
Have scrapbooks of newspaper clippings + dance photos stashed away?
How about VHS tapes of past performances that have been collecting dust in a closet?
Bring them to the Heritage Lab + convert them to DVDs and have a watch-party!
Create archival displays + exhibits for shows + fundraising events or when applying for grants.
Whatever your need, The Story Center and Heritage Lab can help you achieve all your storytelling and preservation goals. For more information, visit
