Alberta-made boxes and the materials was paid for by the BCGA. BCGA program administrator Tyrion Miskell sees the American Kestrel Nestbox Project as a way to expand starling control tools in the valley. “We hope that by


increasing the starling predators in the valley, it is a

natural way to discourage nesting and control the population,” she says, adding that she would like to see the kestrel population grow over the next five to 10 years. “We are hoping for success in the pilot project, and that the kestrels find their way to the boxes, make new homes and return annually.”


OWNS also initiated the Summerland MAPS project, which stands for Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship, in 2016. It involves gathering data on breeding populations of songbirds in the South Okanagan.


A fundraiser for both


projects is currently underway. It’s called the Wine Wall Fundraiser and involves donation of a bottle of wine for the wall, along with $20. The money goes towards projects, while the wall of wine is won by one of the contributors at the end of July. Donations can be made at a variety of sites throughout the Okanagan.
