4-H program celebrates milestone

ABBOTSFORD—A BC 4-H ambassador’s role is to promote awareness of the 4- H program while serving as a resource for 4-H members, leaders and the public. 4-H members ages 16-21 are eligible to apply for the two- year term and are selected based on their public speaking ability, leadership and communication skills and knowledge of the 4-H program. This year, the BC 4-H Ambassador program held its 20th annual ambassador training weekend. To celebrate the milestone, a 4-H ambassador reunion was held at the Rancho in Abbotsford, May 18. Program founders Suzanne Skanning and Pat Tonn were joined by ambassador alumni, including Sarah Van Heeswijk, one of the program’s first graduates, who now manages the ambassador program while working with the BC Ministry of Agriculture.

Many ambassadors shared about their time in the program and how much being an ambassador impacted their lives. Tyrell Trask travelled over 1,500 kilometres, from two
hours north of Fort St. John, to be at the event. “I’ve met some of my best friends through the ambassador program and have enjoyed promoting the program in my region so
more members can experience all that this program has to offer,” he said. “It was wonderful to visit with so many of the ambassador alumni,” noted
Tonn. “I was very impressed with all the exciting opportunities the past ambassadors have pursued using the leadership skills they developed through the program.”
