OCTOBER 2019: ISSUE 126

Because of scatter week we only held three regular meetings in September and our speakers were al l club members. Anne Tait had a personal interest in visiting St Kilda and discussed the historical background to the evacuation of the population in

1930 and the subsequent restoration of the building through the efforts of the National Trust for Scotland and volunteers. Bruce Clark then gave an illustrated talk on Seaplanes and Flying boats and their link to the River Tay. An attempt by the Mercury-Mala composite plane/boat to break the record for a seaplane flight was achieved despite failing to reach its ultimate destination of Cape Town, South Africa. Finally George McIntosh presented a talk on Scottish engineers and scientists that had a major impact with their inventions and innovations. The names cited read like a Who’s Who of famous people - James Watt, John Logie Baird, Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Telford were only four of many people mentioned. Further details of the talks can be found later in this edition of Klips and the website gives an update of forthcoming events.

We are currently looking to increase the diversity of our membership and are seeking people who might like to join our club who would like to help make a difference at home and abroad. Members have been asked to think of anyone they know who might like to know more about Rotary, give them a leaflet and invite them to an open evening on Tuesday 15th October. We are seeking a wide range of people to join us, to bring their talents to help make a difference l o c a l l y , n a t i o n a l l y a n d internationally. So, hopefully we have come up with a few names and invited them to come along. Attending the meeting does not mean any commitment by anyone who comes along but we hope that

attending a free evening where we showcase what we do, what is required will persuade one or two, or maybe a few, to join our happy gang! Please let Irene Walker and President John Fernie know if you are bringing anyone to this meeting as we urgently need to sort out arrangements for catering for the extra numbers.
