At Nice Harbor with a yacht with a helicopter on board in the background BY ANGELA JONES

This summer, I traveled to

Europe, once again, to partake in all of the beauty, culture and history it offers travelers from all over the world. On this trip, my daughter and I toured 15 cities in 5 countries over a three week period. As always, nothing was planned in advance. All we knew when we left the U.S. was that we had one way tickets to Nice, France. I studied French language and

culture when I was in school for several years so I was a little familiar with Nice (pronounced like niece). I had a pen pal there when I was in middle school. I also had a pen pal in Dakar, Senagal and hope to visit that part of Africa soon. While in Nice, I discovered there

is a large group of people of African decent living there. One of the crew on the boat tour we took around the Nice harbor was from Africa. The shipmate made the comment to me as I was leaving the boat, "Come back soon and bring all of your friends and your family members too." With that kind of warm welcome, who would not want to visit Nice again? Its difficult to go into detail about

Nice in one sitting; it is so multifaceted. There are beautiful beaches, high mountain retreats, ancient ruins, amazing food and incredible shopping. We stayed in four different hotels in four nights in Nice. When we left the U.S. I thought we would just stay in Nice for one day. We came for the novelty and stayed because, well there is just so much to see and do. Nice was nothing like what I

expected. It was so much more than a playground for the rich and famous on the French Riviera. What I liked most about Nice, and there are so many things to love, is its close proximity to so many other coveted destinations like, Cannes, Saint Tropez and Monte Carlo, Monaco, for instance. One can hop on a boat or train and reach any of these locations, from Nice, in a couple of hours and for less than $60. And that is exactly what we did. When we discovered how many place we could reach from Nice so inexpensively, we tried to visit as many as possible. Stay tuned to the Hampton Roads Messenger for more details about what we discovered in Nice and the other glamorous getaways that surround it.

your teen and consider making a pledge together about safer driving. Reduce risking driving behaviors that contribute to accidents such as driving distracted and speeding. Always encourage your teen to wear a seat belt whether they’re a driver or passenger.

Use Caution in School Zones During the summer months, it’s

easy to forget that you need to reduce your speed in school zones. Whether your child goes to Calvary or Barron Elementary, always follow the speed limit and exercise caution when driving near schools. Many children may not be on the lookout for drivers and may try to cross the street or retrieve a ball. Following school zone laws is essential in reducing pedestrian accidents.

Teach Your Child How to Handle

an Emergency Educators teach your children

many important life skills, but you can’t assume that your child is learning everything they can about handling various emergencies. Not only should you arm your child with important information like knowing important contact information, but your teen drivers should know what to do in the event of an accident.

Talk about encountering

strangers, encourage your child to always have a “buddy” whether walking in a neighborhood or riding the school bus, and teach them the importance of reaching out to an adult they can trust (such as a teacher or guidance counselor).

As a parent, don’t forget to

be a good role model and lead by example. If you want your children to make good choices while behind the wheel or exercise caution in other scenarios, make sure that you follow the rules as well.
