Do you recommend products or is that architect or client specified? This varies from project to project - some tenders will have a complete specification which details everything down to which brand of paint we should use. This is a double edged sword though as it’s fantastic in terms of cost management, there are no surprises for the customer in this instance, but it can be expensive as most will specify well-known brands which come at a premium.

Other projects will come as just an outline plan; these clients are happy for us to work alongside them to spec the entire job as we go; which allows us to value engineer.

Unfortunately, nine times out of 10 these jobs take longer as we’re waiting on decisions on options that

the client had no idea they would need to decide on. Either way we always try to point our clients in the right direction to get the best value for money.

If you could build anything for anyone what would it be and why? I think ultimately we would love to build bespoke, one off, detached houses for people. To work with someone to get an understanding of their vision, take an empty plot of land and brick by brick turn their dream home into a reality. To be involved in that process from start to finish would really be quite special!
