History of Beccles Lido: Exhibition
BECCLES and District Museum is currently hosting an exhibition about the long history of Beccles
Lido.
The exhibition has been put together by Suzanne Gibbons, one of the directors of Beccles Lido Ltd. She has drawn on a wide range of material from the collections of the museum, local
newspapers and the
photographs of local people. The earliest images are of the old granary which became the first changing rooms in the 1870s.
This was superseded
by ‘The Bathing Place’, built in 1894, which had much better changing facilities but still involved swimming in the river. The present site opened in 1959. The
exhibition, commemorates which the 10th
anniversary of the acquisition of the pool by Beccles Lido Ltd, runs until September 8th. The museum is open every afternoon,
except Monday,
from 1.45pm to 4.30pm and entrance is free. In the photo Barry Darch,

initiative in
taking it over and developing it into a facility which gives huge pleasure to young and old alike. It has a fascinating history going back a century and a half.’
