Fires break out after heatwave


WILDFIRESflaredintheborough as Britain baked in record temper- atures lastmonth. Firefighters in full kit tackled two


major blazes as themercury hit the high 30s on Thursday, July 25. In Chart Sutton, six fire engines


tookonatwo-hectare cornfieldcon- flagration.Theywere calledout just after 2.30pm. A spokesman for Kent Fire and


Rescue Service said the crews’ first priority was to limit the fire’s spread. Two hours after arriving, having


used threemain jets and three hose reel jets on the flames, firefighters declared the incident over and re- turned to their stations. Members of the public raised the

spokesman said: “Anyone who spots a grass fire should report it as soonaspossible,providingasmuch detailaspossibleonthelocationsoit can be dealtwith before it spreads. “During periods of hot and dry


weather, incidents on grassland have the potential to becomemuch biggerwildfires.” At Leeds on July 30, amajor fire


broke out in a field of wheat off Burberry Lane destroyingmuch of the cropwhichwas due to be har- vested imminently.


Club’s centenary success


BOWLERS have celebrated their club’s centenary this summer by taking top prize at the Headcorn Ladies Triple Day. Loose Bowls Club fielded the
