THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE RHS GARDEN WISLEY
This month, our Media Horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, raises a glass to a fabulous new addition at one of our most popular gardens…
Wisley is a name that summons plant lovers in much the same way that Charlie was drawn to the chocolate factory. (Plus they do sell chocolates and chocolate cosmos as well!)
The year 2019 marks the culmination of a £20 million project to create a new RHS Garden Wisley Welcome Building and what a welcome they’ve created!
For years, the plant centre was the place where many people made horticultural memories – making trips to pick out the latest botanical treats. This new creation is no doubt an outstanding base for a million more memories to be made.
Having been kindly invited by the RHS, one Monday morning a few weeks back, I went from West to East to witness the snipping of the gorgeous garland guarding the front entrance to the new building.
Coffee and breakfast greeted us and then we were ushered outside alongside a stunning new avenue of cherries to hear what Director General Sue Biggs and Alan Titchmarsh had to say. Our umbrellas looked like a collection of multi-coloured palms sheltering horticultural greats from Roy Lancaster to some of our top television talent including Mary Berry and Nicky Chapman, but the rain did nothing to dampen the excited enthusiasm.
Sue Biggs spoke with confidence and pride in the historic moment of transformation for Wisley, before introducing legend of all things leafy and floral, Alan Titchmarsh. His words were passionate as he spoke in length about our horticultural industry and the need to support it, culminating in a reminder that it is in fact the oldest profession on earth – Adam was a gardener!
