Not everything colourful in the garden, grows!
Whilst not everyone can have a Capability Brown estate, complete with deer park, ha-ha and lake, we can make the garden space we do have look larger and more interesting with the help of a few accessories... Mirrors aren't just for indoors! Placing a mirror at the end of a path so that it reflects back as you walk towards it will make the path, and thus the garden, seem longer. Placing mirrors around a seating area will make even the cosiest space feel more expansive. If you have a dark, shady area, 'hiding' a mirror at the back of it will reflect and maximise what sunlight does reach it; add interest and suggest there is far more than meets the eye. If possible, try to avoid straight lines – straight edges to lawns or borders and, particularly,
straight paths. By adding a curve or bends in your path, the perception is of greater length. If you can, take a path around a bush or tree (even if only for a foot or so) as this will suggest that the garden is wider with somewhere else to explore. Add 'pops' of colour – and think beyond just coloured plant pots and containers. What about some bright decorative wall art which can withstand the elements – metal work, ceramic, designs on vinyl, even coated canvas. Using items of different sizes placed strategically, around the garden, the eye will naturally be drawn to them and perceive the overall area as more spacious.
