Penguin Rocks NEW FOR 2019

We have had a busy start to 2019 at Woodside Wildlife Park, with the construction and grand opening of our brand-new Humboldt penguin exhibit. “Penguin Rocks” is a large, purpose- built walk-through enclosure, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the Humboldt Penguin. A large under-water viewing area provides the perfect opportunity to observe these playful, and often very cheeky, penguins swim, dive and play with one another. Daily feeding demonstrations reveal the impressively agile nature of the penguins, where they will happily dive for their food right in front of visitors, and often demonstrate their speed and power by diving in and out of the pool in a ‘dolphin-like’ fashion.

We have 13 individuals, all under 3 years old, from two separate collections in the UK, who have all bonded together over

the past few weeks, to the point that you wouldn’t believe they had never even seen each other before moving to Woodside. “Galileo and Washington”, who came from the same zoo, are the two cheeky ones to watch out for! They are all eating an impressive amount of fi sh every day (roughly two full buckets!), including hand-feeding from the keepers, allowing daily health-checks, which is a very positive sign that they are settling in well.

As part of an international breeding program, our Humboldt Penguins are all incredibly important to the future of the species by creating more and more successful breeding collections across Europe.

The next stage for Penguin Rocks is to introduce free-fl ying Inca Terns, which are a sea-bird species that would naturally live alongside the Humboldt Penguin in the wild. The Inca Tern is a

‘plunge-diver’, which means they dive into the water to catch fi sh, which will add another exciting level to our daily feeding demonstrations with both bird species being fed together.

The arrival of Humboldt Penguins adds another vulnerable species to our ever- growing list of endangered animals who live at Woodside, with one of the most recent being two very cute, 9 month old Red Pandas.

We house over 200 animals at the park, which include; tigers, wolves, crocodiles, birds, butterflies and many, many more! Our friendly, experienced keepers provide fun- filled hourly feeding demonstrations, educational shows, and exciting private animal experiences, to ensure there is always something available for the whole family!

We quickly noticed we had two very naughty penguins who like to peck at keeper’s boot laces, watches, brushes and anything else they can get hold of, including trying to climb in the feed buckets!
