Celebrating 50 years of award-winning housebuilding

When owner and founder of Shanly Homes, Michael Shanly, built his first property in Pinner, Middlesex in 1969, it would have been difficult to imagine that 50 years later, this Beaconsfield-based company would have grown to more than 200-people strong and built over 12,000 new homes, many of which have been delivered in the Thames Valley area

During this time, the company has carved out its own unique place in the market. Its focus on providing characterful and distinctive new homes with an emphasis on high-quality design, specification and final finish has contributed to its success. In 2018, the company recorded sales across an average of 20 live sites every month.

This success is underpinned by an award- winning and dedicated team whose expertise enable the company to deliver a broad range of homes for almost every aspect of the property market. This includes luxury townhouses and apartments by the River Thames in Windsor to large-scale regeneration schemes in Maidenhead. The in-house architecture team is adept at ensuring that each home works in harmony with its surroundings, caters for the needs of the local area, and appears bespoke in both look and feel.

The Shanly Group of companies also comprises its commercial arm, Sorbon Estates. As a long-term investor, asset manager and developer of commercial properties across the South East, it has played an integral role in enhancing communities across the Thames Valley region. Sorbon Estates portfolio comprises more than 300 commercial properties, including offices, retail and leisure units and manages 1,300 commercial tenants.

Over the past 50 years, the company has been proud to work with some of the most exciting retailers and restaurateurs in the industry, from The White Company and Phase Eight to Prime Steak & Grill.

However, it is people and communities that are at the very core of the Shanly business. Even today, there are members of the Shanly team that began their careers with the company decades ago. The company takes pride in the personal development of its team, with a dedicated Shanly Academy that provides comprehensive training and learning experiences to some of the industry’s most promising future stars. This is in addition to Shanly Group’s recent partnership with the University of Reading to curate an exhibition and sponsoring a number of student lectures in its architecture faculty throughout 2019.

It is this passion for people and communities that inspired the creation of Shanly Foundation which was established with the sole purpose of supporting local charities and organisations and is financed entirely by the profits generated by the Shanly Group of companies.

As well as forming long-term partnerships with selected charities such as Thames Hospice and Sayers Croft, the Foundation welcomes applications for donations

to help support some of the most disadvantaged in the community. To date, the Shanly Group and Shanly Foundation have contributed in excess of £20 million to support hundreds of local community groups and charitable organisations. In 2019, to mark the company’s 50th anniversary, the Foundation will be donating a further £55,000 to 17 charities selected by staff, Shanly Homes customers and Sorbon Estate tenants.

Tamra Booth, group operations director of the Shanly Group, commented: “Fifty years on from the completion of the first home in Pinner, we are delighted to again be recognised for delivering award- winning homes and amenities. Winning the prestigious Housebuilder of the Year Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team who take enormous pride in delivering excellent homes. We couldn’t be happier to win both this and Residential Development of the Year Award for our Thameside scheme in our 50th year.”

The past 50 years of solid business growth have placed the company on a firm footing and it has an exciting pipeline of projects underway as it moves forwards. The company will continue to champion local business, communities, people and work closely with its partners to ensure another successful 50 years in the industry.
