M

agnetic Analysis Corporation is sad to report the recent death of its Chairman, William

S. Gould 3rd. Gould succeeded his father, a company founder, as President in 1964, and remained in that role until 2007, when he became Chairman, a position he held until his death. During his tenure, he successfully built the company from a small US-based nondestructive test designer and manufacturer to its current position as a global leader in providing NDT eddy current, ultrasonic and fl ux leakage systems and services. In 2016, he was honored by the

American Society for Nondestructive Testing for his contributions to the NDT industry through his “knowledge and dedication” for over 50 years. Gould held a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Yale, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society,

and an MBA degree from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar. Over the course of his years

as President of MAC®, Gould led the company into many new developments, beginning with the introduction of the ERIC eddy current tester in 1968, which featured solid state electronics, phase gating, and later, pulsed eddy current techniques. During the 1970’s, he expanded the company’s products to include fl ux leakage testers, and in 1989, MAC introduced its own line of Echomac® ultrasonic rotary testers for tube and bar. In 1992, under Gould’s leadership,

the company launched the ERIC V, the fi rst fully computerized eddy current tester. Featuring a real- time, full-color graphic display and sophisticated software control of test parameters and analysis of test signals, this instrument set a new benchmark for the industry. Gould

The result was not only the successful growth of the business, but also the long-term commitment of countless employees all over the world”, observed his son Robert R. Gould, MAC’s recently elected Chairman. The Gould family, which has been

Delegates are set to step up the

pressure on the government to fully support British workers and contractors. British Steel’s last Annual Report

and Accounts says 4,238 people work for the company but new GMB estimates put the number of supported jobs in the supply chain at 28,395 – leaving a total of 32,633 at risk. Previous estimates had put the number of jobs at risk at just 25,000 but the new analysis reveals

thousands more are in the balance. Ross Murdoch, GMB National

Offi cer, said: “There are far more than 30,000 jobs at stake at British Steel, directly and through the supply chain. It’s much worse than had been feared.”

GMB members are showing today that the fi ght for jobs at British Steel is a fi ght our whole union will get behind. There is outrage across the country at the prospect of indispensable foundation industries like British

steel going to the wall, while the Government simply sits on its hands. “The UK has lost almost half a

million manufacturing jobs in the last decade and while the Tory Party leadership candidates debate how much they want to cut the taxes of the richest, our members are looking at a bleak and uncertain future. A continuing decline in

manufacturing is not inevitable, but we need action to protect the skilled, well-paid jobs our proud industries can provide and support.”
