“THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE”

THE first weekend of the month had lovely summer weather for Harleston’s Open Gardens weekend, when townspeople and visitors were invited to explore more than 20 surprising spaces on a diverse garden trail. There were people everywhere, trail map in hand, stopping to share impressions of the gardens they had visited or to swap advice on which to visit next. A lovingly restored and maintained vintage bus offering free rides contributed to the picture of quintessential market town as garden owners welcomed

considerable

numbers of visitors over the two days into private worlds not normally open to the public. Harleston’s shops, cafes and other watering places were busy offering refreshments and other

services; and many gardeners offered tea and cake alongside garden stories, raising money for favourite charities. Some had spare plants, cuttings and seedlings for sale. The weekend was organised

by the Harleston’s Future events team with help from members of Harleston Garden Club. Both groups were delighted with the turnout and warmly thank all households who worked so hard to ready their gardens and for sharing with their many visitors some of Harleston’s extraordinarily diverse, and large and small garden landscapes. It was hugely enjoyable, and a repeat performance in two years’ time is definitely on the cards.

Suffolk pupils take to the streets

LIVING Streets’ Walk to School Week is over for another year and we’d like to thank everyone in Suffolk who contributed to making it a massive success. Over 12,000 pupils from 400 classrooms in Suffolk joined in with pupils across the UK to enjoy the many benefits of walking to school. Motor vehicles are the

biggest source of air pollution and one in four cars on the road at peak times are on the school run. More children walking to school means fewer vehicles on the road and improved air quality for everyone. Families in Suffolk can know

that they’ve helped be part of the solution this Walk to School Week by swapping four wheels for two feet. Walking to school not only
