Almost 200 years later and the Fisher
Theatre is
THE Fisher Theatre has been at the heart of Bungay since it was built in 1828. Built by David Fisher Bungay’s Fisher Theatre is the fourth oldest working provincial theatre in the UK and the last of thirteen Georgian theatres built by Mr Fisher. Think of him as East Anglia’s very own ‘Greatest Showman’.
still an important part of the community offering residents and visitors to the town and area plenty of variety and entertainment. But more than that, there are important connections with education and the local economy as well as social networking and wellbeing. Curating
a fantastic
programme of events is Manager Darren France. Darren is joined by a team of dedicated and passionate staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver first class theatre, live screenings, cinema, music and spoken word. Theatre performances are delivered by renowned touring groups, Upshoots Theatre Company – based at the Fisher - as well as three or four on- stage productions from the long established and popular Fisher Theatre Youth Group. As an example of the variety

This is just a taste of what is on, please see the programme or call in for full schedule. An area that the team have worked hard to do is in making the most of the space and facilities available here. As such there is an ever-growing schedule of community and wellbeing events and social get togethers. These include: Thursday at the Fisher which is al about art for people wit memory loss and dementia. There is also matinee cinema showing every other Tuesday which are perfect for older people with recent showings
including Some Like it Hot and My Fair Lady. As a more general social gathering you might be interested in Meet Up Mondays which is open to everyone and anyone to come and have a up of tea or coffee, slice of cake and a chat – this sees a diverse group and is proving very popular. The importance of these events is that the team here understand their role in the community. The Fisher Theatre is a meeting place, a hub, somewhere for people of all ages and backgrounds to meet up, share experiences and socialise. A great venue, lots of positive
impact on the local community and very popular with residents and visitors alike, it is all plain sailing. Well undoubtedly the biggest challenge for Darren and the team is in keeping the Fisher Theatre open to continue serving the community and future-proof the last remaining Fisher Theatre. The theatre has been given the opportunity to become debt-free and bought outright and secured for the community, at a hugely reduced sum of £150,000, if the money can be raised by the end of the year. If you would like to get involved you can donate as little as £3 on the crowdfunding site, pop into the theatre to donate or best of all attend the great shows and events and show your support that way.
