Drunk teacher drove into post
A SECONDARY school teacher collided with a lamppost after downing a bottle of wine, a court heard. NicolaCotter (46) crashedinto the
post just aftermidnight onApril 24 in her silver Peugeot on Royal Engi- neers Road on herway to buy ciga- rettes. Officers arrived at the scene and
found Cotter (pictured) standing next to the car with a head injury claiming“I thought someonewasup my ****.” Prosecuting, Debbie Jones told
Maidstone Magistrates Court: “An ambulancewasnearbyandtookher toPemburyHospitalwithaheadin- jury.Abreathtestat thepolicestation indicatedshehad82mgof alcohol in her breath.” The legal limit is 35mg. The court heard Cotter had three
glassesofwineathomebeforehead- ing out to buy cigarettes. Defending, Jag Takk said: “Miss
Cotter is a science secondary school teacher but is unable towork at the moment. She is supported by her
partner.Shesuffers fromanxietyand depression. Miss Cotter describes herself as a binge drinker and smoker.Onthenightof thecrashshe
hadan undying needfor a cigarette. Itwasonthewaybackfromtheshop she collidedwiththe lamppost.” Cotter sobbed in the dock as the
court heard her mother is dying of cancerandtherewasnotmuchcom- municationbetweenthe two. Chairman of the bench, Gary
Knightsaid:“We’veheardtodaythat by drinking you caused both dam- age to the lamppost and suffered a headinjury.Weknowyouhavevar- ious issues in your personal life and suffer fromdepression.” Cotter, of Saxon Drive, pleaded
guiltyandwasgivena £265 fine and wasdisqualifiedfromdriving for 18 months.
