Behind those four ‘asks’, we identified what we called the Big Opportunity. It said simply:
“The East Midlands is among the fastest- growing regions in the UK. The businesses based here innovate and make and move goods and services more effectively and efficiently than anywhere else in the country. “The continued success of the East Midlands is not only integral to delivering the success of the Midlands Engine but will also be central in ensuring a competitive UK economy for the long-term.”
We offered Government a vision: to create
a zone of ultra-high growth in logistics and advanced manufacturing, hinged around East Midlands Airport and the adjacent 700- acre East Midlands Gateway strategic rail freight interchange and logistics development. This zone would draw upon the talent available across the three counties and cities and the expertise of our six universities. It would capitalise on having the M1 and Midland Main Line running through our core, the development of HS2 and the
regeneration that will happen around the station hub planned for Toton. Brexit might still be uncertain, but the future of UK plc doesn’t need to be. As always, the Chamber offers its experience and expertise to those developing the policy required to meet the asks and deliver the big opportunity. We are more than willing to act as a critical friend, a champion and informer of Government policy.
And, of course, we will continue to work
with our 4,200+ diverse membership to make sure the real life experience of East Midlands businesses shapes the growth that will secure this country’s long term success.
