Chief Executive’s welcome

Brexit has been a serious distraction for British politics since the EU Referendum in 2016. It’s understandable. It is the biggest thing to happen to this country since the Second World War.

But more than once, the Chamber has

asked our elected Members to focus on potholes not politics. At a time of doubt and uncertainty, it’s essential we send a message to the outside world that UK plc is, and will continue to be, open for business.

To drive home the message, in the autumn we led a delegation to the heart of Westminster to deliver a manifesto reiterating this simple wish. It said: “The UK is at a pivotal moment in

history. In the face of uncertainty, businesses in the East Midlands will always look for the opportunity to succeed. To support them in this, it is essential that our elected representatives deliver the basics that businesses need to grow.”

Our manifesto for growth, entitled Delivering a Great Future, laid out four ‘asks’ of Government that will remain relevant whatever happens over Brexit:

Connect us – invest in our infrastructure, including:

• Broadband delivery • Mobile phone connectivity • Improving roads • Electrifying the Midland Main Line • Investing in renewable energy production and

• Incentivising lower carbon business activity

Get the basics right – address the day-to-day barriers to business including:

• Leading education reforms driven by the needs of business

• Embedding opportunities to experience workplaces in curricular activity

• Delivering a transparent and predictable business rates system

• Making sure the regulatory culture supports business and

• Helping the Small Business Commissioner to encourage equitable public procurement practices

Realise our international ambition – back a global East Midlands by:

• Placing real SME business experience at the heart of future agreements

• Minimising future tariff barriers and • Ensuring businesses continue to enjoy Free Trade Agreements

British Chambers of Commerce's Chamber of the Year

“East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) has shown impressive growth and retention in recent years. The strategic work and engagement of the Chamber with local stakeholders embodies the mission of Chambers of Commerce everywhere.

“Its efforts to engage with other Chambers and improve member offerings is a testament to its dedication.

Congratulations to the entire East Midlands team, truly worthy recipients of this award.”

Francis Martin, President of the British Chambers of Commerce
