Improved cartonboard capacity at MEL in Greece

L

eading recycled cartonboard manufacturer Macedonian Paper Mills

(MEL) in Greece increased its production capacity since the installation of a NipcoFlex shoe press from Voith. Part of the PAK Group, which

comprises 19 global companies, MEL produces high-quality recycled board and packaging for customers across the Balkans, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. A recent comprehensive modernisation of MEL’s mill at Thessaloniki included the installation of a Voith NipcoFlex shoe press on the BM1, which

enables a higher dry content, reliably corrects deviations in the CD profile and ensures a uniform thickness across the entire 3,600mm-wide paper web. Through the higher dry content after the press section the BM1

now requires less steam in the following drying groups, which reduces the overall energy consumption of the machine. The result was an impressive

Italy’s Cartiera Marchigiana to have a dryer rebuilt

The dryer section of the PM1 line at Cartiera Cama’s Montelupone mill in Italy is being rebuilt by Toscotec. The repeat order from Cama’s

owner Cartiera Marchigiana is for TT SteelDryer technology that will increase the PM1’s drying capacity and efficiency, without increasing the paper machine’s length. Toscotec will supply a new frame

for a number of dryer batteries included in the rebuild and 23TT SteelDryers, designed for an operating steam pressure of 10 bar, featuring bearing housings, steam fits and turbulence bars. The scope also includes stretchers, guides, doctors, canvas rolls and walkways, as well as an overhaul of the mechanical drives. The service

package includes onsite erection, supervision, and commissioning and start-up assistance. The delivery is being planned

in two phases, from July through December 2019. The PM1 has a reel trim of 2,340 mm and produces core board and carton board from 650 to 1,200 gsm,

using 100 per cent recycled paper. Davide Bettanti, chief executive of Cartiera Marchigiana, said: “Both for Cartiera Cama and for Cartiera Marchigiana we were looking to invest in the best available technology, because we rely on technological innovation to reduce the environmental impact

were able to improve board quality characteristics, reduce breaks and therefore significantly increase machine availability,” said Georgios Georgiadis, mill manager at MEL, who was keen to emphasise the strong working relationship: “The atmosphere between the individual teams was excellent. The close collaboration with the colleagues from Voith Tolosa even resulted in some friendships,” he added. “I will certainly recommend collaboration with Voith to colleagues in the paper and board industry.”

of our mills. “We placed two major orders

together for our two production bases, because we want to ensure the same product innovation and quality upgrade across our mills, to ensure the flexibility we need to satisfy the demands of the market. “Our expansion, in terms

of production increase, must also go hand in hand with the rationalisation of our energy consumption and with a significant efficiency boost. We have high expectations for the outcome of Toscotec’s rebuilds.” Enrico Fazio, Toscotec’s P&B head of sales, added: “We are very pleased about this second order. Just like we are doing for Cartiera Cama, also for Cartiera Marchigiana we will design and implement the best solution, in order to deliver on the mill’s plans of production increase and energy use optimisation.”
