THERE’S a delightful story behind the newly-opened Dell House
Residential Care Home in Beccles, and owners Robert Blackham and Sally Crawford can’t wait to share it with their first residents.
The brother and sister
owners are directors of their family business, Cygnet Care Ltd, which bought the care home on the site at Beccles about three years ago. “That care home, The Dell,
was where Sally first started her career in care, as a carer about 30 years ago,” said Robert. “Little did she know then that she would be back, all of these years later, to rebuild it,” he said.
The brand-new, purpose-
built Dell House was officially opened on March 22nd by Elfrede Brambley-Crawshaw, Lord Mayor of Beccles. It is ready to accommodate 60 residents and has beautiful
views over the
Waveney Valley on one side and over the playing fields of Sir John Leman High School on the other. “The views are wonderful and to be able to hear children playing and see them running around having fun is really lovely,” said Robert.
When completely redesigning Dell House, prize- winning architect Tom Ground has emphasised its stunning location
with large, low-
down windows so that people can enjoy the views whether sitting or standing. The views from the first-floor terraces are particularly impressive. “It is a cracking location,” he said.
Dell House is the fifth care home to join the Cygnet Care family, which has care homes in Poringland, Earsham and adjoining ones in Blofield, all within 30 minutes of their head office. This ensures the managers of each home can be well supported and that homes are not run from ‘arm’s length’. Cygnet Care is a family- run business set up by Sally and Robert’s father, Malcolm Blackham. He sadly passed away in October of last year but had enjoyed seeing the development of the Dell House project and was very proud of the progress that the company is making.
As a purpose-built care
home, Dell House is perfectly suited to the needs of the residents, with easy access from ground floor bedrooms to the extensive garden and to the terraces from the first floor. “Dell House is a lovely environment in which to live, built to focus on small-group living, with four distinct areas to provide levels of care suited to each
individual resident,” said Robert.
It has a café, cinema, activities rooms, wellness room, hair and beauty salon, family room and large garden which includes walkways and raised beds in a gardening area. This can be booked for occasions such as birthdays and parties, so residents can enjoy more private special events with their friends and relatives.

EXHIBITION AT ST MARY’S CHURCH, BUNGAY
TO commemorate the 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria, the exhibition committee
at Bungay are
staging an event entitled Victorian Bungay and Beyond. Opening with a reception on the evening of Friday 24th May, the exhibition
runs
each day from 10am to 4pm thereafter, until Sunday 2nd June.

Victorian life in the area, the Bungay museum is showing a varied collection of pictures from that time and there will be displays regarding industry, agriculture, fashions, craftwork and leisure activities, all in St Mary’s Church. Other activities

culture. Having started as a kitchen assistant some 20 years ago, she has progressed through various roles, gaining experience and qualifications, and is now Cygnet Care’s Operations Manager, overseeing all five homes. Frances explained: “Having a compassionate, well-trained team is crucial to the success of our service. thereby allowing them to live as full and active a life as possible. There are plenty of activities to join in with and round-the-clock support from our team for residents and their families.”
Dell House also has three lovely lodges within the grounds, which are ideal for couples who may not want residential
care but would
appreciate the nearby services of Dell House.
