Beccles Lions Present their 3rd Community Defibrillator to the Town of Beccles

BECCLES and District Lions Club were approached by Mr Tony Clarey, whose life was saved by the use of a defibrillator, asking if he could gift through the Beccles Lions a defibrillator to the Town of Beccles in memory of his parents Derrick & Stella Clarey. This new defibrillator is at the rear of the Beccles Community Library - who have volunteered to check and manage this life saving facility. It is easily accessible from Roy’s Car Park. Beccles & District

Lions

Club with money raised by local people, have now provided three Public Accessible Community Defibrillators to Beccles Town all placed

in

good well populated areas such as the Citizens Advice Bureau in the Town Centre, Beccles Railway Station and now at Beccles Community Library. The new Defibrillator was officially accepted by the Mayor, Councillor Elfrede Bramley-Crawshaw by Beccles Lions

Chris Lambert.

Club President, The

Lion Mayor

said, “We do really appreciate all the hard work that Beccles Lions Club do for the town of Beccles and the

surrounding

community and it is with great pleasure I accept this, their 3rd Defibrillator, on behalf of the people of Beccles, especially with the club celebrating its 50th year of being a Lions Club in Beccles.” Lion

President Chris

Lambert added, “Because of the very generous gift by Mr Tony Clarey and the support of Beccles Community Library

we were able to provide our 3rd Defibrillator earlier than planned, which is great news for Beccles. Also it is fitting that in our 50th year as a Lions Club in Beccles we should see such wonderful appreciation and support from the people of Beccles. A special thank you must go to Mr Tony Clarey for enabling this to happen.” Lion Dermot Wesley-Smith, the club’s welfare chairman, added, “As previously we have been The

working closely Community with

Trust who supplied the first Defibrillator.

involved deserves a very big thank you, from the Beccles Community Library Manager Annaliese Matheron-Avery for her support in offering assistance

to maintain the

Defibrillator and of course to Mr Tony Clarey, whose life was saved by the use of a Defibrillator for his very generous gift that has enabled us to provide this, our 3rd Defibrillator to the people of Beccles.”

Tony celebrates 50 years working for

Hammond Motor Group

WANGFORD Veterinary Clinic is asking all those young artists out there to get creative. We are celebrating pets and

how much we love them, all of them, of all shapes and sizes, dogs, cats, rabbits, in fact any animal that can be described, as a pet.

IN 1969 man landed on the moon for the first time, The Beatles played their last public performance and Richard Nixon was the President of America. A little closer to home, Concorde flew its first maiden test flight out of France and Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister of Great Britain. A little-known fact at the time,

was that Tony Whiteman started his apprenticeship, as a panel beater working for A W & D Hammond at the age of 17. Incredibly, after 50 years he has outlasted them all and is still there. To celebrate this fantastic achievement, Hammond Motor Group awarded Tony with a plaque and a watch. Tony was one of only eleven employees when he first started working for A W & D Hammond, which was based in Wenhaston at the time. The company had only formed seven years previously in 1962. One of his first jobs was to strip out a door on a Humber Snipe, “I’ve never seen so many screws in one door!” he recalled. The types of vehicles he worked on back then were Singers and Triumphs, a far cry from the vehicles of today; now he works on all types of vehicles from HGV’s, coaches, cars and agricultural machinery. “Back when I first started, we

had five-year apprenticeships and we were trained to do every aspect of the job, from dismantling, to panel beating and the respraying”, he said.

The company soon out-grew

itself and moved to Halesworth in Norwich Road, which is now currently the Ford site, before splitting again to Blyth Road in the town and becoming one of the largest accident repair centres in East Anglia. Tony was there on every occasion.

receive art equipment, a family ticket to Africa Alive and treats for their pet.

All posters must be on A4 or A3 size paper and they will be, judged on appearance and the demonstration of the theme. The words “I love my Pet” must be included on the poster (adults may help with that if needed but should contribute to the artwork).

As someone who has grown up with animals and is a mother of five, I have always believed that having family pets is good for children. Our competition is all about celebrating just what a special part they play in our lives. In addition to teaching us empathy, responsibility, and love, pets can make wonderful non-judgemental friends and companions for us all. Pets also show children how to express love by stroking, being gentle, hugging or kissing and have been shown to help children overcome shyness,

develop trust, and enhance their social skills.

As an artist, Marney says that

each and every pet is different and has their own unique personality, which she tries to capture and we are hoping that our young artists are able to show just how special their pet is to them.

The deadline is Monday, 24th June. Winners will be notified by June 30th. Entries must be posted or dropped in to Wangford Veterinary Clinic by this date. I am afraid entries cannot be returned to the artist by post, but can be collected from the practice. Please send the artwork with the artist’s name, age, home address, parents name, parents phone number. Post or deliver your entries
