Ask the expert

Tis week in our Ask the expert series, we ask Audiologist Hannah Harris from award winning Buchanan Optometrists and Audiologists all about hearing. Why do I need a hearing test?

Hearing loss often goes unnoticed, and it is the people around you that find it difficult. They have to repeat things in conversation, they find you have the television or radio too loud, or you find that people seem to mumble or not speak clearly. These are some of the most common indications of hearing loss.

Will I need hearing aids?

We see many clients who need wax removal. We use the latest video otoscopy to have a look at the health of your ears and identify any issues or concerns. Video otoscopy is far superior to an optical otoscope which doesn’t give the same magnification and clarity.

Do I need to treat my hearing loss?

No, but research has shown that treating hearing loss can also delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Hearing loss can also lead to embarrassment and social isolation.

Aren’t all hearing tests the same?

No. At Buchanan Audiologists I spend the time (up to 90 minutes) with you to discuss your problems,

we carry out your test in a custom- designed sound-attenuating room to ensure you get the best results. I perform many more tests than most basic hearing tests including ear health screening, video Otoscopy to assess the health of your ear canal and eardrum, outer ear and skin assessment. Tympanometry which evaluates your outer and middle ear, also the mobility of the eardrum, looking for treatable conditions. Pure tone air conduction and bone conduction audiology tests and further tests as required, speech audiometry which measures and scores your ability to hear and recognise words at different intensity levels.

Are all hearing aids the same?

No. The newest digital hearing aids can be fine-tuned over many channels to give you better hearing. They have directional microphones, background noise can be filtered out, and speech improvement technology assists with speech recognition in noisy situations. Bluetooth links to your phone or tablet and television connections allow wireless streaming of audio directly to the hearing aid so, for example, your television can be at

a reasonable volume for the room and enhanced through your hearing aids. These latest generations of hearing aids give you a much better quality of hearing and a better quality of life.

What does a hearing assessment cost?

It only costs £149 for your comprehensive hearing assessment which includes all the tests mentioned above. You get to see me personally, and I will deal with all aspects of your hearing care.
