Mote Park dam floodswarning

BULLDOZERS are poised to move into Mote Park in a major operation to protect part of the borough from potentially cata- strophic flooding. Engineers are asking Maid-

stone’s planning chiefs for permis- sion to carry out “significant” works ona 140mdam,whichstops 200,000m³ of reservoir water from barrelling down the River Len into TurkeyMill. The works, they say, are “exten-

sive” and will have a considerable impact “on the recreational quality of the park, visual appearance and biodiversity”. Ina report toMaidstoneBorough

Council’splanningcommittee, case officer Marion Geary said she recognised the “substantial harm” the work would have on the park, but said the council’s “statutory duty to comply with safety re- quirements ...outweighthatharm.” Work on the embankment dam, which separates Mote Park Lake

Reservoir from TurkeyMill Pond, centres around building a second, 60m-wide spillway to control the release of water during extreme flooding, if pressure on the dam threatens to destroy it or cause the reservoir to overflow. Ms Geary said: “Failure of the

dam would result in downstream flooding of Turkey Mill Business Park and several areas of housing along the River Len.” Engineers anticipate around 30

trees would be felled and large amounts of earth excavated. The 12-hectare Mote Park Lake

Reservoir was formed between 1793 and 1800,when the River Len was dammed. MsGeary saida 10-yearlyreview

of the dam’s safety concluded the reservoir does not meet modern- day standards. The work would last four to six

weeks and was due to be debated by MBC’s planning committee as DownsMailwent to press.
