Asbestos halts station progress


THE discovery of significant amounts of asbestos in a build- ing bought byNetworkRailwill further delay multi-million pound plans to transformMaid- stone, its station and the east end of town. The lack of progress on the


demolition of the Victoria pub in Week Street has pushed the deliv- ery date for the Maidstone East Rail Station from this summer to next spring. Network Rail had hoped to


bring the derelict building down last September, but it still stands swathed in scaffolding and plas- tic, directly over the railway line. The £2.5mstationimprovements,


whichwill include a glass entrance, a concourse and café, is being fundedbytheNationalStations Im- provement Programme, with £1m fromKCC’s growth fund. However, it is also central to


more ambitious plans from the county and borough councils, which have spent an estimated

AN imaging service for cancer pa- tients in Maidstone has been praisedbyagovernmentwatchdog. Maidstone PET-CT Centre at the


town’s hospital in Hermitage Lane, which provides diagnostic and screening procedures, was rated “good” by the Care Quality Com- mission. The service, run by AllianceMed-


ical, operates five days a week to see patients within recommended time frames. Maidstone PET-CT unitmanager


DavidBrownsaid: “Thiswasour first inspection by CQC since opening in 2017. Itwas a great opportunity to


showcase the fantastic work the team does, and to demonstrate thatwe are continuously striving to improve. “The team is proud of the unit


and the facilities it provides for pa- tients, and was pleased the CQC recognised its efforts with a ‘good’ rating.” The report identified three areas


where further improvements should bemade. MrBrown added: “The teamwel-
