Cheshire Ploughing & Hedge Cutting Society Congratulations to Sam Gittins from Helsby, a young competitor who won the Training Match Ploughing Competition on Sunday 14th April. Training matches give a good opportunity for younger competitors to have a go and receive advice from experts on the day.

The Princes’ Countryside fund is opening the next round of applications on 16th May for their Churchill Fellowship Awards. This offers successful applicants a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the world and research a topic of their own choosing. Issues being researched by this year’s Churchill Fellows range from rural isolation, to mental health services based on farms, from rural time banking schemes, to benefits of planting trees on farmland. They will use their findings overseas to inspire positive change in the UK upon their return. Visit

New rules on abstracting water Water abstraction rules have changed and most previously exempt activities cannot continue without an abstraction licence in place. If you abstract more than 20 cubic metres per day and you want to continue to do so, you must apply to the Environment Agency for an abstraction licence: You can apply for a new licence abstraction at:
