£450k to help pupils dealwith emotions


A MENTAL health charity has beenawarded£450,000 to support a programme targeting school children in Maidstone, writes Jade Schopman. Maidstone andMid-KentMind’s


newYouth Support Programme is launching onApril 1 andwill look at issues such as stress, anxiety and depression. The charity says children are


having problems associated with parentsparting,domestic violence, sibling issues and schoolwork. It hopes to reach children by


holding sessions in schools. Marketing assistantTomFishen-


den said: “The course will be a mixture of activities. We already have awellbeing café inMaidstone but we are planning on introduc- ing a newonewith a youth focus. “We are also offering monthly


support groups, andmental health first aid training for issues like de- pression, anxiety and stress.

said: “Children of primary school age do not yet understand their emotions, so they struggle with howto dealwith big changes.”

A RIVER police officer was in- jured on the hand after being hit by a lead ball thrown from a bridge inMaidstone. The officer was on duty in a


boat on the Medway when the item was hurled from the Broad- way bridge, at about 2.20pm on Tuesday,March 12. Chief Inspector Nick Sparkes,

A POPULAR summer event in Maidstone, scrapped by the bor- ough council, is to take place again this year. A property developer behind a


large new housing scheme has agreed to fund Proms in the Park for the next five years. Maidstone Borough Council


claimed the event was no longer viable after attempting to charge entry to the open air classical music event. Gates open for the free event at Whatman Park at 3pmonMay 25.
