Woodbridge
Love your High Street!!!!
Why you should love your Woodbridge high street . . . more now than ever before!
Almost three years ago the country was asked to decide on whether to stay in the EU or leave. We all know the outcome of the referendum, yet we are still unsure as to what that means, for us and our businesses.
There is no getting away from the fact that these are uncertain times. However, what we can have absolute faith in is our wonderful High Street! Independent local businesses run by people who live in the community they serve and share the same passion and love for their town and village as you, our reader.
In this article and on this page we aim to showcase our fabulous high street, thoroughfare and market place and highlight the importance of continuing to support the wonderful tapestry of businesses you will find, right here in the heart of your community.
Investing in your community: Research shows that £1 in every £5 is spent online. That means that £4 in every £5 is spent in-store, it is still by far the most popular way of shopping. The good news here is that for every £1 spent in an independent high street business between 50p and 70p will come back in to the local economy. Think about it, your local shop uses local suppliers, the staff buy lunch locally, go to the town pubs and restaurants, advertise in local publications, use a local accountant, the list is endless. Yet, there is research to show that for every £1 spent online or out-of-town only 5p will make its way back to the local community. In short, money spent local stays local.
Value for money: But the best deals are always online, aren’t they? Well, maybe, but it is not always the case. You can’t haggle with a computer, you won’t see the sale banners for your local shops if you don’t look away from your smartphone. When you shop locally you will more than likely be dealing with the owner or manager, tell them what you are looking for and what your budget is, and you may well be surprised.
Convenience and customer service: This is a no-brainer. When you buy from your high street you can try clothes and shoes on or ask about the features of electrical items to ensure you get the right one for you. If you need to return an item, then you simply wander back in to town. There is no fuss, no hassle, the big advantage to shopping locally is in the customer service you will receive. If you can’t find what you are looking for, ask. If the shop you are in doesn’t have it, they will gladly point you in the direction of somewhere that does. The businesses help each other which in turn helps you, the consumer.

How can you help your high street? It is not about spending your entire weekly shop on the high street or ditching and deserting national brands. You don’t need to go to the local pub every week or buy all your shoes from the local outfitter. However, try to think of your local businesses when you are next heading to the shops. Is there one in town that might do what you want? Many towns now offer free parking for a limited period so why not pop in for an hour have a look around and see if you can get something from your list from one of the independent businesses on the high street. They are the life-blood of our communities. They provide local employment, vital services, and add value to your community. So, get out and explore your high street, you will be glad you did!
