COMPETITIVE TRAIL NEWS IN THE SOUTHWEST TRAVELING TROPHIES
HONOR NATRC LEGENDS On February 16, the North American Trail Ride Conference held its re-
gional convention and annual awards banquet at Parrie Haynes Ranch in Killeen, Texas. The special evening included the presentation of two trav- eling trophies named in honor and memory of legendary NATRC competi- tors who recently passed. The Sharon and Don Rubley Memorial High Point Junior Horseman-
ship Traveling Trophy was awarded to Hannah Steele of Round Mountain, Texas. The trophy has been presented since 1995 to the high point junior who competed in any division in memory of Sharon Rubley of Oklahoma. Don Rubley was looking forward to making the award presentation again this year, but sadly also passed two days before the convention. Both Sharon and Don were advocates of
NATRC and especially of youth in the sport. The two, along with daughter Barbara, rode SA Sirocco to 4000 miles in NATRC competitions. The Larry and Barbara Gould High Point
Junior Horse and Horsemanship Traveling Tro- phy was also awarded to Hannah Steele and her grade Quarter Horse Molly. Larry Gould passed in November 2018. He had earned 13 NATRC National Championships and cur- rently holds the third highest lifetime mileage

children in NATRC, and their son Scott was a previous winner of the trophy more than 20 years ago. The trophy was re-named in their honor as the couple were instrumental in promoting NATRC, serving as com- petitors, ride managers, volunteers and in leadership positions on the National Board. Both were active with the Horsemasters ETC riding club in East Texas and tirelessly supported the Windridge Therapeutic Riding Center through the Horsemasters Com- petitive Trail Ride. “I am very honored to win both of the trophies. I never met these peo-
ple, but I have heard so many stories about them from other riders,” said Hannah, who is 15 years old and finished her first year of competition. “I hope I can be as successful as them someday! w
