Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Dormant volcanoes will awaken the outdoor adventurer in you, while rustic fare will sate your soul
AUVERGNE-RHÔNE-ALPES – a new combination of two vast, rugged regions – is synonymous with mountains and volcanoes (thankfully dormant!). But you don't need your skis to enjoy the wild wonders of this corner of France.
Rhône-Alpes Rhône-Alpes is defi ned by its mountain range and the Rhône river (its tributaries lead down south, lending a very Provençal feel to its southerly reaches). In summer, Alpine ski resorts' grassy slopes are just
the ticket for hikers, walkers and outdoorsy types. There are meadows to explore and fl ora and fauna to spot, as well as plenty of adrenaline-fuelled sporting activities in which to take part. As with many inland French regions, Rhône-Alpes boasts many lakes; great both for water sports and a refreshing dip. In fact, Lake Geneva (also known as Lac Léman) and Lake Annecy are extremely popular with savvy campers.
The region's three main cities are Lyon, Saint-Étienne
and Grenoble, with Lyon ruling the roost in terms of gastronomic excellence. No visit to Lyon would be complete without a spot of supper at a bouchon. These small, traditional eateries always offer great value and an authentic foodie experience. Rhône-Alpes has numerous famous sites on its
roster, from the Pont d’Arc to the Chamonix glacier, Mont-Blanc and the spa towns of Évian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains; not to forget the sprawling Côtes du Rhône vineyards. The Ardèche département to the southeast boasts countless natural wonders, stunning gorges and caves to explore. Be sure to visit the Grotte de la Madeleine, which is full of stalagmites and stalactites and offers a son et lumière show in its impressive main chamber.
Another unmissable attraction is the mostly-ruined 12th-century Château de Crussol, which affords breathtaking views of the Rhône Valley.
