Pays de la Loire
Castles, cool seaside resorts, theme parks and culture galore… this region has it all
They are both named with reference to the mighty fl euve that fl ows through them – and both employ the river's name to promote tourism – but PAYS DE LA LOIRE and Centre-Val de Loire are quite distinct regions. Pays de la Loire has an eclectic topography to
explore: swathes of lush vineyards growing the likes of Muscadet; charm-fi lled seaside resorts on the Atlantic seaboard; historic nooks and offbeat attractions… it is the family destination par excellence. Its oh-so cool capital is Nantes, once the HQ of the Duchy of Brittany. The city may have switched (geographical) allegiances, but its rich Breton legacy lives on in the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, which still rises imperiously over the old town. But that's not its only draw: the citywide Voyage à Nantes art trail attracts tens of thousands of curious visitors each summer. Also popular with visitors is Pays de la Loire's award-winning historic theme park Puy du Fou. Bringing history to life is the name of the game at the amazing Vendée-based amusement park. Youngsters
Hitch a ride on Nantes's mechanical elephant
are sure to love its large-scale re-enactments and stunt-packed shows. The Sarthe département, meanwhile, hosts the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race, held since 1923. For some urban exploration and historical insight,
head to Angers (sturdy ramparts!), Laval and La-Roche- sur-Yonne. And if you get a chance, pop down to Saumur for a tour of its spectacular château.■
