He was very polite, she recalls, and he remembered

her from a brief encounter they had at the World Cup in Omaha the year before. She had spoken to him about her stallion then too, but at that time Total Star was too young for Edward to be interested. So almost a year later, standing in the Four Seasons, she simply handed the Total Star folder to him. “I stayed to watch he and Hans Peter conduct the clin-

ics, and the weekend was fantastic. I headed home with the hope Edward would be interested, but at that point, all I could do was wait,” she recalls.

DEAL OF A LIFETIME It wasn’t long, however, until she heard from Edward that he was indeed seriously interested in her horse. By June, a deal was struck and they made reservations for Total Star to be shipped from Toronto to Amsterdam. “What made this fairy tale even more special for me was that I was able to accompany Total Star on his flight to Amsterdam. And since there was no special quarantine required, I even accompanied him from the airport right to Edward’s barn at the Glock Horse Performance Centre. I helped get him settled in his stall at their beautiful facil- ity. What an amazing place!” she says. “I am so blessed to have bred such an amazing horse.

And then to have him go to one of the best trainers in the world—it’s been an incredible adventure,” she continues. “And now Edward and I are friends. He stays in touch and keeps me informed about Total Star. Now we wait and see how he progresses since, as many know, Edward tends to wait to compete horses when they are confirmed in the more advanced work.” What’s next for Estelle and her broodmare Day Star? She has since crossed Day with the stallions Fürst Roman- cier (Fürst Heinrich), Borcelino (Boston) and Dannebrog (Don Schufro). In addition, Estelle is expecting another Totilas foal out of her Rotspon x DeNiro mare this spring. Estelle doesn’t plan to rebreed Day to Totilas, however. “I’m afraid I will be disappointed,” she says. “What if

the next one isn’t as special as Total Star? As I said, he’s a once-in-a-lifetime for a breeder. I’m okay with having the one.”
